A Bronze Age barrow, possibly a bowl barrow, is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs on Grimstone Down, Stratton. The feature was digitally plotted during the Dorset Upper Frome AIM project. The barrow is a Scheduled Monument (1003771).

Full Description

One of a group of round barrows on Grimstone Down: Barrow 'D' - SY 64389557. A bowl barrow, 45 feet in diameter and 5 feet high. <1> Barrow 'D' - SY 64389557 one of six grass covered bowl barrows varying from 6.5 to 16 metres in diameter and 0.7 to 2 metres high. <2> "SY 642958. Group of four mound barrows on Grimstone Down". Scheduled. <5> The barrow is as described by Authority <2>. A bowl barrow 15.4 metres in diameter, 1.7 metres high. Barrow revised at 1:2500 on MSD. <6> A Bronze Age barrow, possibly a bowl barrow, is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs on Grimstone Down, Stratton <7>. The feature comprises a very low indistinct earthwork mound approximately 15m in diameter and is part of a barrow cemetery comprising eight barrows (NHRE Hob UID 1457329). The feature is positioned within the banks of an Iron Age/RB field system (MDO42865) and is respected by these. It is recorded as a tumulus on the OS 1st Edition map <8>. The feature is still visible on current Google Earth imagery <9>. It was digitally plotted during the Dorset Upper Frome AIM project.
