Full Description

Sub-circular pits are visible as earthworks on current Lidar imagery on Grimstone Down, Stratton (1). The features are considered likely to be post medieval chalk pits, although the group includes some more ephemeral and irregular hollows that may be natural in origin, or possibly anomalous features associated with the Iron Age/Romano-British settlement MDO42865. Two of the features on the east side of the group are recorded on the OS 1st Edition map (2). The features were digitally plotted during the Dorset Upper Frome AIM project.
