Summary

Over twenty skeletons were found at Great Down Quarry in 1870, in 1892 a lead coffin was examined by H St George Gray. Nails and angle pieces indicated a wooden outer coffin. The skeleton was of a man about 28; by the feet were hob nails and near the waist was a Kimmeridge shale spindle whorl. Pottery and coins from Carusius to Constans were found nearby.
