Summary
Multiple sub-circular pits are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs, distributed across the area of Fore Hill, Maiden Newton. Two features within the groups are recorded on the OS 1st Edition map as being old chalk pits, one other as an old gravel pit. The remaining features may also be post medieval chalk or gravel pits. They were digitally plotted during the Dorset Upper Frome AIM project.

Full Description
Multiple sub-circular pits are visible as earthworks on 1940s aerial photographs, distributed across the area of Fore Hill, Maiden Newton (1-3). Two features within the groups are recorded on the OS 1st Edition map as being old chalk pits, one other as an old gravel pit (4). The remaining features may also be post medieval chalk or gravel pits. They were digitally plotted during the Dorset Upper Frome AIM project. The majority of the features are still visible as earthworks and cropmarks on current Google Earth imagery.
