Summary
Linear ditched and banked features are visible as earthworks alongside Sydling Water on 1940s aerial photographs, to the north of Sydling St Nicholas and at Up Sydling. The features are thought to be post medieval sluices and drainage channels associated with watercress beds. The major sluices are recorded on the OS 1st and 2nd Edition maps. The features were digitally plotted during the Dorset Upper Frome AIM project.

Full Description
Linear ditched and banked features are visible as earthworks alongside Sydling Water on 1940s aerial photographs, to the north of Sydling St Nicholas and at Up Sydling (1). The features are thought to be post medieval sluices and drainage channels associated with watercress beds. The major sluices are recorded on the OS 1st and 2nd Edition maps (2, 3). The features were digitally plotted during the Dorset Upper Frome AIM project.
Someof the features are still visible as earthworks on Google Earth imagery, although the majority of the area is under trees and vegetation.
