Full Description

Areas of ridged and ditched cultivation are visible as an earthwork on 1940s aerial photographs at Up Sydling, Sydling St Nicholas (1). The features occupy a single field on a 1947 aerial photograph but comprise two distinct areas of cultivation on opposing alignments, possibly indicating two former fields, although there is no clear evidence for a lost field boundary between the two areas. A post medieval/modern trackway cuts through both areas and it is possible the northernmost area of cultivation overlies this, which would indicate different phases of cultivation. The features may be those of post medieval narrow ridge and furrow, although a modern origin for the northernmost area is also possible. The features were digitally plotted during the Dorset Upper Frome AIM project. The features are no longer visible on Google Earth imagery.
