Full Description

Celtic fields betweem Burl Farm and Burl Moor at ST 588037 cover at least 20 acres and have been heavily ploughed. The banks appear to be confined to one block 500 by 200 yards. <1> Banked and scarped linear features are visible as earthworks and cropmarks on aerial photographs to the west of Burl Farm, Evershot <2-5>. The features are predominantly curvilinear in character and are probably historic field boundaries and lynchets; the majority clearly relate to the surrounding historic field pattern, which indicates a predominantly medieval origin. Several of the features are recorded as removed field boundaries on the OS 1st Edition map <6>. An earthwork of possible medieval date is recorded near Burl Farm at ST 588 036 under NRHE 882587. The remains of a celtic field system are recorded at the same location under NRHE Hob UID 882545. It is therefore possible that some of the earthworks have a late prehistoric origin. They were digitally plotted during the Upper Frome and Sydling Valley AIM project. Many of the features remain visible on Google Earth imagery.
