Monument record MDO43230 - Industrial site south east of South Lodge, Brownsea Island, Studland
Please read our guidance about the use of Dorset Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
In 2005 National Trust staff and volunteers excavated an industrial site being exposed by cliff erosion. Excavations revealed a brick-lined pit. A further lining of clay lay behind the bricks. The bottoms of the bricks had channels in them. A sooty coating in these channels suggested that the bricks were used to channel heat through the feature, which was interpreted as some sort of evaporation tank. It has been suggested that the pit may be associated with the alum and copperas industry known on Brownsea at various intervals from the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries.
