Summary
In the early eighteenth century a country house was built on the site of the deserted medieval village of Bryanston. The settlement had twenty three tax payers recorded in 1333, suggesting quite a large settlement, but the number of households had dwindled to six by 1662.

(ST 875070) Deserted Medieval Village of Bryanston. <1> <3>
The original village of Bryanston lay in the vicinity of the church, the Portman chapel, (ST 80 NE 16) at the mouth of a dry valley (area ST 875071). In Medieval times it was a relatively large settlement; twenty-three tax-payers were recorded in 1333, but in 1662 the number of households had dwindled to six. Early in the 18th century the site of the village was occupied by a large house and its dependencies (See ST 80 NE40). <2>
