Full Description

Seventy or eighty 'British' coins from Okeford Hill (Centred ST 815095), as described by Hutchins, are Evans type F:1/2 uninscribed silver staters. <1> Hutchins stated in 1774 that, "in digging gravel, 1753, to mend the ways on Ockford hill near the road that leads from thence to Turnworth, were found in a little tump seventy or eighty British silver coins. They were scarce broader than a sixpence, but much thicker, flat on one side, and convex on the other, weighed 88 grains ..... and resembled one in Borlas's History of Cornwall p 242 (?) plate xix (see plate) No. 11. They were most of them sold to a jew ..... An inhabitant of this parish tells me that about the year 1788 he dug up some similar to this, excepting that it was much larger (sic). He sold it to a silver smith at Blandord who told him it was an East Indian coin". <2> Listed by Allen as a hoard of 70-80 uninscribed silver staters of the Durotriges. <3>
