Full Description
A very large icehouse in Melbury Park, Melbury Sampford located at ST 57 06. The icehouse is built of brick from the estate kilns. The entrance is approached by a upwards sloping ramp which leads to a wooden door (not original) which opens into a passageway. This passageway is short and enters into the ice chamber by the original, heavy, cast iron door. This doorway is only about 1 metre high. The original door is still hung on its hinges and within the original frame but it is suffering from rust and is very difficult to open without breaking the hinges. The chamber measures 6 metres from apex to the floor and is 4.5 metres in diameter . There are remains of iron nails within the walls which were presumably used to have insulation material on. Due to rubble on the base of the icehouse it was not possible to tell if there were drainage provisions. It has been estimated that the icehouse could have held up to 48 cubic metres of ice. (1)
