Full Description

The Pavilion Theatre was built between 1928 and 1929 and is located close to the sea front in the Lower Gardens, Bournemouth. The architects were G Wyville Home and Shirley Knight. It originally comprised of a 1518-seat theatre with a ball room and supper rooms. It was remodelled in 1934 and again during the 1950s, which reverted it back to the original style. It is a beaux arts composition in stripped classical style. It is constructed of red brick with Empire stone dressings and pan-tiled roofs. It has a plan comprising of two halves on a steeply sloping site. The theatre is on two levels at the front, and the ballroom to the rear with the supper room and public house (a new use, prior to 2007, of the existing building) below reached by corridors and stairs to either side of the theatre. The interiors are greatly influenced by Greek and Egyptian styles. Surrounding the pavilion is a terrace with steps leading down to the Pleasure Gardens, which are on the English Heritage Parks and Gardens Register. The pavilion is an excellent example of a historic multi-entertainment venue, surviving in good condition, at a major seaside resort. Together with the gardens, it forms an important leisure complex integral to Bournemouth's attraction, character and heritage as a seaside resort. <1-2>
