Monument record MDO43744 - Steam engine at Sydenham's Timber Yard, Lower Hamworthy, Poole

Please read our .

Summary

A Wren and Hopkinson horizontal cross-compound steam engine of around 1861 at JT Sydenham's Timber Yard driven from a boiler made in 1888 by R&J Gallaway Engines of Manchester is documented at the site. It was installed in 1890 and fuelled by woodchips from the saw mill. It drove a saw mill and extraction plant, and supplied steam for central heating for a wood drying kiln. The engine was due to be modernised in 1968, but local interest groups were hopeful of saving it.
