Monument record MDO43805 - Later prehistoric ring ditch, possible Bronze Age barrow, northwest of Tarrant Monkton, Tarrant Launceston

Summary
A probable Bronze Age round barrow is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs. The site is defined by a single ring ditch which completely encloses a circular area measuring 16m in diameter. Total diameter is circa 21m. The size and shape of the enclosure suggest that it is the plough levelled remains of a Bronze Age round barrow. There is no sign of any barrow mound or other internal feature such as a funerary deposit. The feature was digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AI&M project.

Full Description
A probable Bronze Age round barrow is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs. The site is centred at ST 9390 0908 and is defined by a single ring ditch which completely encloses a circular area measuring 16m in diameter. The size and shape of the enclosure suggest that it is the plough levelled remains of a Bronze Age round barrow, several of which are known in this area. There is no sign of any barrow mound or other internal feature such as a funerary deposit. <1, 1.1, 2, 2.1>
A sub-circular/sub-rectangular ring ditch c 350m to the northwest of Tarrant Monkton, Tarrant Launceston, is visible as a cropmark c 21m by 19m on an aerial photograph dated 1976 <3>. The feature is cut on its south side by a later prehistoric/Roman trackway (MDO 43806), suggesting an earlier feature, possibly a Bronze Age barrow. The feature was digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AI&M project.
