Full Description

A possible Iron Age and / or Roman settlement site is visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs. The site is centred at ST 9354 1074 and comprises a group of at least five conjoined rectilinear enclosures, which are defined by linear ditches measuring up to 3m wide. The site extends roughly south-west / north-east for 115m and measures circa 35m wide. The rectilinear enclosures each measure between 15m and 26m wide. The western most enclosures contain probably domestic storage or rubbish pits and a probable hut circle at ST 9353 1072. The enclosures could perhaps be a multi-phase Iron Age and / or Roman settlement. They cross or are crossed by a linear bank that probably forms part of a "Celtic" field system (see ST 91 SW 128 / UID: 1481255) although the actual chronological relationship is not clear on the aerial photographs. <1,3> A series of conjoined ditched enclosures and additional ditched and banked linear features to the southwest of Brixey's Farm, Tarrant Hinton are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs <2>. The features comprise at least three conjoined sub-rectangular enclosures averaging c35m long by 27m wide, with a group of possible pits to the southeast. A linear banked feature cuts through the group, aligned along one of the enclosure boundaries. Additional ditched linears on a broadly southeast to northwest axis are also viaible. The features are likely to be an area of settlement of possible Iron Age/Roman date, associated with a contemporary field system and trackways. The features may be associated with further enclosures and a trackway to the south (MDO43809). The features were digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AI&M project.
