Summary

Upon the archaeological field excavation or 1 lower st edmunds street the remains of an 18th century building was uncovered. This was a brick structure with mortared red brick walls about 0.2m thick and of an unknown depth. The cellar walls were constructed within a clearly defined, vertically-sided constructed cut, whoch had subsequently been backfilled with mixed shingly sand. The building was mapped in 1866 and known to have been demolished by 1956. There is also an assemblages of finds comprising of Medieval pottery, post-medieval pottery, Non-local stone, Roof slate, animal bone, marine shell, iron and coal.

Full Description

Upon the archaeological field excavation or 1 lower st edmunds street the remains of an 18th century building was uncovered. This was a brick structure with mortared red brick walls about 0.2m thick and of an unknown depth. The cellar walls were constructed within a clearly defined, vertically-sided constructed cut, whoch had subsequently been backfilled with mixed shingly sand. The bricks measure generally 280mm by 11m by 60mm. The building was mapped in 1866 and known to have been demolished by 1956.
