Summary
Monitoring of the groundworks undertaken at Milton Abbey has provided further insight into the extent of the medieval and post-medieval graveyard on the south side of the abbey choir.

Full Description
The construction of two trenches related to the work being conducted at Milton Abbey were observed. The water trench was excavated over a distance of c. 45m from the south side of the south chior aisle. This area was part of a monastic graveyard during the medieval period to late 18th century. Revealed from this trench was the occasional fragments of disarticulated human bone, but not identifiable grave cuts. This trench was dug to a maximum depth of 0.6m.
The excavation of the electric trench to the south of the choir was to a maximum depth of 0.45m. There were frequent inculisions of redeposited chalk and occasional fragments of disarticulated human bone. No distinct grave cuts were identified from this work.
