Full Description
The site of a Royal Observer Corps monitoring post. The site was built as a part of an extensive network of posts designed to confirm and report hostile aircraft and nuclear attacks on the United Kingdom.
The post was opened in January 1961 and was closed in September 1991. The post was found to be in a good condition at the time of the Defence of Britain survey. <1>
All surface features remain intact with the green paint in good condition. An aerial bracket and metal dome on the ventilation shaft indicates this was a master post. The site is located underground in an overgrown rectangular compound on the north west side of a sharp right angle bend in Downs Lane. 10 yards south of a disused lime kiln beside the road. <2>
