Full Description
A large irregular, sub-rectangular depression is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs taken in 1946 to the west of Tarrant Rushton Airfield, Tarrant Rushton, and on Environment Agency lidar imagery [1, 2]. The feature is approximately 140m long by up to 165m wide and truncates a historic field boundary shown on the OS 1st Edition map [3]. It is shown, but not named, on post-war OS mapping dated 1955 [4]. It appears to be an extractive pit but may be a 20th century feature, possibly associated with the wartime use of Tarrant Rushton airfield, although this is not certain.
The feature was digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM Project.
