Full Description

Two closes of meadow and pasture called "SEYNTE JOHNS" are mentioned in a Court Roll of 1566. This land was named from the hermitage "that stood, at one time, on the left bank of the stream from TRIPPS FARM, near where it issues from beneath DYNNEY Bridge, at CASTLETON" In the SHERBORNE Parish Register occurs the entry "On Nov. 7. 1538, died William HOWELL, hermit of St John the Baptist." The hermitage was already in ruins when LELAND visited SHERBORNE, about 1540, but he noted 'a hermitage of St John by the Mylle, now down'. <1> The meadows referred to above do not have any particular name, and we have no information regarding the site of the hermitage. <2> No further information was obtained during field work, and the location given in T.I. is rather vague and unhelpful. It appears that the hermitage was somewhere S. or S.W. of DYNNEY BRIDGE (ST 6472 1666) an area of meadow and parkland. <3>
