Full Description

Part of the medieval and/or post-medieval settlement of Tarrant Launceston is visible as earthworks on aerial photographs. The site is centred at ST 9436 0943 and comprises three narrow linear banks which combine to form a T-shape that probably defines the boundary between two Medieval and / or Post Medieval tofts which extended between the road and the river Tarrant. The boundary has subsequently been re-adopted as a property boundary. <1> Linear banks and ditches are visible as earthworks at Tarrant Launceston on 1940s aerial photographs and on current Environment Agency lidar imagery <2-3>. The features are visible either side of the road through the present village and may be field or toft boundaries associated with an area of shrunken medieval settlement also recorded under NRHE Hob UID 1481149. Some of the features appear to be cut by a post medieval water meadow (MDO43819). The features were digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project.
