Monument record MDO44893 - Uncertain linear earthwork, Tarrant Launceston

Broken irregular banked linear features are visible as earthworks on the north side of Blandford Camp, Tarrant Launceston, on 1940s aerial photographs and current lidar imagery. The features are of uncertain origin but could potentially be of later prehistoric date, perhaps a defensive boundary or dyke, but could alternatively be of military origin, perhaps First World War in date. The features were digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project.

Broken irregular banked linear features are visible as earthworks on the north side of Blandford Camp, Tarrant Launceston, on 1940s aerial photographs and current lidar imagery [1-3]. The features comprise two broadly parallel rows of broken banked linears extending southeast to northwest for a distance of over 310m. Military features of probable Second World War date appear to overlie the northwestern end of the group on aerial photographs dated 1947, suggesting the features are of probable First World War or earlier origin [1, 2]. The features are within an area of later prehistoric settlement and may be a defensive boundary or dyke associated with this, but alternatively they could be earthworks of military origin, perhaps First World War in date. The features were digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project.
