Full Description
A former bakery at Stoke Mill which was converted into a holiday cottage in the late 20th century. The building dates from circa 1850 and is constructed from rubble with brick quoins and a slate roof. It was at this bakery that Moores Dorset Biscuits began the baking of Dorset Knobs. Samuel Moores and his wife Eleanor were farming, milling and baking here in 1850. In the small bakery Dorset Knobs were baked in the faggot-heated oven for local farm workers after the bread had been made. With early tea they were the traditional meal for local farm workers at the start of the day. It is also reported that they were a favourite food of Thomas Hardy. In 1880 the second son, also named Samuel, opened a new bakery in Morecombelake which is still operational today. <1> <2>
