Full Description
William Whitaker, Recorder of Shaftesbury from 1627-1647, purchased a property for #40, wherewith to found a free Grammar School. This school stood in Bimport Street, a little east of St. Mary's Cross. The list of masters of the school extends from 1633 until 1777. The school was discontinued about 1780 and the premises, then dilapidated, were left unoccupied for many years, and lately have been pulled down. <1>
St. Mary's Cross was approx. at ST 859229, (ST 82 SE 19) from which the above approx. siting was deduced.
No visible trace remains of the school. The site is covered by a modern road. <2>
