Full Description

A Later Prehistoric and / or Roman field system, of the form often referred to as a "Celtic" field system, is visible as soilmarks and parchmarks on aerial photographs. The site is centred at ST 9530 0823 and comprises assorted linear banks and some flanking ditches that appear to form a pattern of conjoined but mostly fragmentary rectangular enclosures, which measure between 30m and 50m wide and are probably fields. The field system extends over an area that measures 735m north to south by 410m wide. The fields share the WNW / ESE orientation of similar systems identified in the area which may once have joined together into a single field system (see ST 90 NE 11 / UID: 209273). <1> <4> An area of possible later prehistoric or Roman period field system to the east of Tarrant Monkton is visible as soilmarks and earthworks on aerial photographs and current Environment Agency lidar imagery <1,2>. The features comprise a series of parallel and perpendicular curvilinear banks and lynchets forming a series of partial enclosures aligned SW to NE. The features may form part of a wider area of field systems to the east and west. The features are also recorded under NRHE Hob UID 1481454 and were digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project.
