Summary

A large irregular ditched hollow feature is visible as earthworks and cropmarks on aerial photographs and on current Environment Agency lidar imagery, on Abbeycroft Down, Tarrant Rushton. The feature is of uncertain origin but may be an extractive pit of potentially post medieval date. It was digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project.

Full Description

A large irregular ditched hollow feature is visible as earthworks and cropmarks on aerial photographs and on current Environment Agency lidar imagery, on Abbeycroft Down, Tarrant Rushton [1-3]. The feature measures approximately 80m by 50m and is situated on the south side of Tarrant Rushton Airfield on a 1946 aerial photograph [1]. It is of uncertain origin but may be an extractive pit of potentially post medieval date, or alternatively a feature associated with the airfield, although it is uncertain what this could be. Nothing is recorded at this location on any historic mapping. The feature was digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project.
