Monument record MDO45343 - Field system, possibly Post Medieval, Tarrant Launceston

Please read our .

Summary

A possible Post Medieval field system is visible as soilmarks on aerial photographs. The site comprises a ditch measuring circa 6m wide that appears to define the north-western end of two conjoined rectilinear enclosures, which are perhaps fields. The site extends over an area that measures 182m long by 106m wide and is orientated roughly south-west / north-east. The fields each measure at least 75m wide and 105m long. The possible fields are morphologically very different to the "Celtic" field systems identified locally, which suggests that they are of a different date. They are situated within the south-western corner of an extant field boundary and may form part of the same Post Medieval pattern of fields. Alternatively, they share the same alignment as the possible Roman field system located 500m to their south and could perhaps form part of that system.
