Monument record MDO45436 - Medieval coppice boundary, Weekley Coppice, Tarrant Monkton
Please read our guidance about the use of Dorset Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
Part of a probable medieval coppice boundary and hollow way are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs taken in 1988, once the overlying trees were removed. The site comprises a ditch measuring between 3m and 11m wide which forms what appears to be the eastern half of a curvilinear enclosure measuring circa 235m long by 195m wide; the western half of the possible enclosure is covered by trees. A section of bank flanks the inside of the northern ditch and a linear ditch extends to the east of the enclosure which could be part of the medieval and later hollow way known as Weekly Lane that extends to the north-west (see ST 90 NE 12). The enclosure may have defined part of Weekley coppice on Monkton common.
