Summary
An area of post medieval extractive pits on Allen Hill to the west of Corfe Mullen are visible as earthworks on Environment Agency lidar imagery. The cluster of pits follow a southwest to northeast running seam of sand, clay and gravels. Some additional pits within the vicinity are documented on the OS 1st Edition map and are variously clay, sand, gravel or chalk pits, reflecting the variable geology of the area. The features were digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project.

Full Description
An area up to 750m long by up to 350m wide of post medieval extractive pits on Allen Hill to the west of Corfe Mullen are visible as earthworks on Environment Agency lidar imagery [1]. The cluster of pits follow a southwest to northeast running seam of sand, clay and gravels. Some additional pits within the vicinity are documented on the OS 1st Edition map and are variously clay, sand, gravel or chalk pits, reflecting the variable geology of the area. The seam of pits continues southwest into Sturminster Marshall Parish (MDO45553). The features were digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project.
