Summary
A large irregular post medieval extractive pit on Barrow Hill, Sturminster Marshall, is visible as an earthwork on 1940s aerial photographs. The feature is within an area of sand, silt and clay geology and is documented on the OS 1st Edition map as a gravel pit and on the OS 2nd Edition map as an old gravel pit. It was digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project.

Full Description
A large irregular post medieval extractive pit up to 87m long by up to 47m wide on Barrow Hill, Sturminster Marshall, is visible as an earthwork on 1940s aerial photographs [1]. The feature is within an area of sand, silt and clay geology and is documented on the OS 1st Edition map as a gravel pit and on the OS 2nd Edition map as an old gravel pit [3, 4]. It was digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project. The feature is still visible on 2002 Google Earth imagery [2].
