Summary

A possible post medieval extractive pit to the north of Barrow Hill, Lytchett Matravers, is visible as an earthwork on 1940s aerial photographs. The feature is within an area of sand, silt and clay geology and is shown but not named on the OS 1st -3rd Edition maps. Further extractive pits, possible clay pits, are located to the south within the same field (MDOs 45567; 45568). The OS a5Epoch map of 1955 shows the feature as a pond. The feature was digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project.

Full Description

A post medieval extractive pit to thewest of Crumpet's Farm, Lytchett Matravers, is visible as an earthwork on 1940s aerial photographs [1, 2]. The feature is within an area of sand, silt and clay geology and is shown but not named on the OS 1st -3rd Edition maps [3-5]. Further extractive pits, possible clay pits, are located to the south within the same field (MDOs 45567; 45568). The OS a5Epoch map of 1955 shows the feature as a pond [6]. The feature was digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project.
