Summary
Three post medieval extractive pits in a field to the west of Sandpit Farm, Lytchett Matravers, are visible as earthworks on 1940s aerial photographs. The features are located within a southwest to northeast running seam of sand, clay and gravels. Some additional pits within the vicinity are documented on the OS 1st Edition map and are variously clay, sand, gravel or chalk pits, reflecting the variable geology of the area. The features were digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project.

Full Description
Three post medieval extractive pits in a field to the west of Sandpit Farm, Lytchett Matravers, are visible as earthworks on 1940s aerial photographs [1]. The features are located within a southwest to northeast running seam of sand, clay and gravels. Some additional pits within the vicinity are documented on the OS 1st Edition map and are variously clay, sand, gravel or chalk pits, reflecting the variable geology of the area. The features were digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project. The featurs are still visible as earthworks on 2005 Google Earth imagery [2].
