Full Description

On BLANDFORD DOWN, adjoining the Mile Course, an oval barrow was opened by the Rev. J. AUSTEN. A trench was cut lengthwise from the S.E. end, and 2 1/2 ft. beneath the surface, in the centre of the mound, an extended inhumation was found. <1> The Mile Course evidently refers to the disused BLANDFORD RACE COURSE, which is now largely built upon. The RACE COURSE was centred at ST 916083. There is no available evidence by which this barrow can be located. The mound may have been destroyed by AUSTEN, or it may refer to any of the barrows which are, or were, recently in the vicinity. (See ST 90 NW 39.) <2>
