Full Description

The K6 or 'Jubilee' telephone kiosk was designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott in 1935 to celebrate the Silver Jubilee of King George V, and was a development on Scott's K2 box. The design, characterised by long horizontal glazing in the door and sides, has become iconic and some 11,000 boxes to this design were ultimately produced. It is constructed of cast iron, with three glazed sides with margin lights, and a solid rear side. The Sloane-inspired canopy dome is placed above the four arched sides, each with a crown in relief above a glazed panel inscribed TELEPHONE. When considering telephone kiosks for listing, strong setting and group value with other listed buildings, often in a Conservation Area, are the primary criteria in the selection process. Consideration may exceptionally be given to examples of kiosks where they contribute to a particularly fine location where listed buildings might not be present, but where the issue of special interest can be clearly demonstrated. There are a large number of K6 telephone kiosks nationally and therefore there is a need for greater selection to identify the best examples for inclusion on the list. This K6 telephone kiosk is located in a prominent position within Winterborne Houghton. It has a visual relationship with the Grade II listed St Andrew's Church, situated to the south of the kiosk, but does not, however, have strong group value with any of the other listed buildings in the village which lie further to the west. It is, however, located within the Winterborne Houghton Conservation Area and as such is afforded an appropriate level of statutory protection. On balance, this K6 not of sufficient architectural or historic interest within a national context to merit listing. <1>
