They are between 4m and 15m across and are considered likely to be post medieval chalk pits; they were digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour Catchment AI&M Project.

A dispersed group of 11 hollows are visible as low earthworks on lidar imagery on Muston Down, to the south of Combs Ditch, Winterborne Kingston <1>.
