They are between 8m and 15m across and are considered likely to be post medieval chalk pits; they were digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour Catchment AI&M Project.

A scattered group of three small hollows is visible as low earthworks on lidar imagery at the northern end of Great Coll Wood, Sturminster Marshall <1>.
