Full Description

(ST 86122295) Cross (NR). (4) In the churchyard, south west of Holy Trinity Church is a tapering octagonal churchyard cross with alternate sides splayed out to form a square base. Surmounted by a modern collar and cross. It stands on a large block with modelled top which rests on two steps. Height of shaft 7ft. 1in. (7) The cross consists of a calvary of three steps, one of which is almost buried; there is a socket stone, and an octagonal shaft 12ft. high, surmounted by a modern Latin cross. The cross was restored in the mid 19th century (3). Mentioned as having three steps, and shown pictorially on plan in approximately the position given in Authy. 3. (1-3) The cross shaft and socket-stone are on a calvary of three steps the lower one of which is at ground level. The socket-stone is 0.9m. square, 0.6m. high with chamfered corners and a moulded top. The shaft which tapers upwards is 0.4m square at base and octagonal above. It is 2.1m high. (5) Churchyard Cross, south-west of the tower, with moulded square base on two steps and tapering chamfered shaft with run-out stops. It probably dates from the 15th century with modern cross-head.
