Summary

Layers of rubble, pits, and dumps of domestic rubbish probably relating to the dissolution of Shaftesbury Abbey, were recorded during archaeological evaluation and excavation by Wessex Archaeology and AC archaeology in advance of a new car park at the Westminster Memorial Hospital.

Full Description

Archaeological evaluation by Wessex Archaeology in 1994 (1) and subsequent excavation by AC archaeology in 1996 (2)of the area of a proposed car park extension to Westminster Memorial Hospital, Shaftesbury revealed evidence for demolition deposits associated with the dissolution of Shaftesbury Abbey. The demolition deposits comprised a series of rubble deposits and building debris, together with dumps of domestic rubbish, several pits and a robber trench along the line of the medieval walled courtyard.
