Full Description

Banked and ditched earthworks and areas of faint ridged and ditched cultivation marks are visible at West Morden are visible as earthworks on 1940s aerial photographs [1]. The features comprise banked sub-rectilinear mounds with ditched linear hollows separating these, visible to the north and southwest of West Morden Farm, alongside these are several irregular and/or banked curvilinears that align with the historic boundary pattern at West Morden, its character suggesting a probable medieval derivation. Patches of faint ridged and ditched cultivation are also visible on the south side of the road through West Morden, which respect some of the banked linears, which are most likely field boundaries of medieval origin. The features are considered to possibly be former medieval tofts, field boundaries and areas of cultivation associated with areas of shrunken medieval village. They were digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project. The majority of the features are no longer obviously visible on available Google Earth imagery, save an irregular depression to the south of West Morden Farm, an area of possible medieval ridge and furrow on a 1945 aerial photograph, which is visible on 2008 Google Earth imagery [2]. A further area of shrunken medieval settlement to the southeast is recorded under MDO7811/NRHE Hob UID 457338.
