Full Description

Areas of ridged and ditched cultivation to the southwest of West Park Farm, Lytchett Matravers, are visible as soilmarks on 1940s aerial photographs and cropmarks on 2002 Google Earth imagery [1, 2]. The features comprise irregular areas of broadly parallel ridged and ditched cultivation, on various alignments and within large historic fields that contain linear earthwork boundaries (MDO46938) that divide these into smaller irregular plots. The boundaries are of uncertain origin, potentially anywhere between Bronze Age and post medieval date, although a medieval date is very plausible. The areas of cultivation respect some of these linear boundaries in places suggesting a possible association. The features might therefore be those of medieval ridge and furrow, although a post medieval date is also possible. They were digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project.
