Full Description
Historical: The Manor of COMPTON, COMPTON PUNDELARGE, or COMPTON VALENCE, was held at the time of DOMESDAY by one HUGH de PORTH. In the e. 13th c. it belonged to the family of PUNDELARCHE, passing before the end of the century to the VALENCES, Earls of PEMBROKE. The property remained with them until 17 ED. II, when it passed by marriage to HASTINGS, the Lords DELAWARR, and to the PELHAM family who have held the manor since 9. ELIZ. I. <1>
The house is not named, but is now simply one of the row of cottages. SY 59289328. The house is as described in T.2. It is now unoccupied but in a reasonable state of preservation. The barn mentioned in T.2. at SY 59379334 has been considerably altered and modernized and presents no features of particular interest. See GP.AO/55/24/8. <3>
