Summary

An area of ridged and ditched cultivation in a field to the west of Peaton's Farm, Lytchett Matravers, is visible as faint earthworks on 1940s aerial photographs. The features are considered to probably be those of medieval ridge and furrow. Possible field boundaries, visible on aerial photographs dated 1945 and 1947 may be the remains of a former medieval strip field but are too indistinct to be certain. Full Description

An area of ridged and ditched cultivation in a field to the south of Peaton's Farm, Lytchett Matravers, is visible as faint earthworks on 1940s aerial photographs [1]. The features are considered to probably be those of medieval ridge and furrow and were digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project. Possible field boundaries, visible on aerial photographs dated 1945 and 1947 may be the remains of a former medieval strip field but are too indistinct to be certain [1, 2]. The larger irregular field was probably previously sub-divided in some way, however. The features are no longer visible on available Google Earth imagery.
