Full Description

In the garden in front of the farmhouse near the church, known as 'Church Farm', may be seen the socket stone of what was formerly SPETTISBURY Village Cross. It is in a fine state of preservation and measures 33' square by 15' deep, and doubtless at one time carried a massive octagonal shaft of the usual 15thc. Type. In a corner of the garden are worked stones, no doubt remains of part of the cross. <1> 'Church Farm' no longer exists; two modern but pre-war houses have been built in its place. The socket stone is not visible at the site or in the vicinity, and may have been removed with the debris of the old farmhouse. Situated at 'A'-ST 90970289, in the churchyard, is a fragment of worked stone which could have been a part of a lantern head cross, or some similar memorial. Circular in section, the 'shaft' has been snapped at each end. The narrower end has a number of carved flutings. The stone stands loosely near the churchyard wall. <3>
