Full Description

(SY 924788) A medieval settlement formerly existed at Smedmore, named Metmore in Domesday. Strip lynchets of the former settlement lie to the north (SY 98 SW 24). Good <2> says that the remains of the village were probably obliterated in about 1700 when the house was rebuilt and the grounds redesigned and enlarged. <1-3> No remains of the medieval settlement were recognised at Smedmore House or its immediate environs. <4>
