Monument record MDO47542 - Iron Age burial, Portesham

1st century AD inhumation with grave goods including a decorated mirror. Excavated following metal detector finds.

In the course of constructing a deep drain in the year 1858, Mr Manfield came across a number of skeletons, and, from the regular way in which they were deposited, it was supposed that this was an old burying place. It confirms the tradition of Old Portisham. <1> The site indicated above now grass covered, is on the east side of a metalled track to the farm buildings. No information was obtained upon these burials during field investigation. The field Old Portisham, centred at SY60958632, yielded no evidence of occupation, and was about to be ploughed. <3>
