Monument record MDO47611 - Crouched burial, Sutton Poyntz Water Treatment Works, Weymouth
Please read our guidance about the use of Dorset Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
Archaeological evaluation and excavation in advance of the construction of a new water treatment works in 2001 revealed a range of features, the earliest being stream channels cut into the natural drift geology. Many of these contained residual mid-late Iron Age pottery within their fills and one had a crouched inhumation cut into its side. A rectangular platform in the NW of the site was found to have been created by water erosion but other drainage features, possibly dated to the 13th or 14th centuries, were suggested as being contemporary with the dam to the N of the site.
