Summary
The site of Southbourne coastal battery, an emergency battery built during the Second World War as part of Southern Command's coastal defences. The battery was operational by 1941 and mounted two 5.5-inch naval guns. It was armed until at least September 1944 and manned by 172 Battery of 554 Coast Regiment. Aerial photography from 1972 shows that the battery has been removed and the site is occupied by beach and sand dunes.

Full Description
Southbourne coastal battery located at SZ 156 909. This was an emergency battery built during the Second World War as part of Southern Command's coastal defences. The battery was operational by 1941 and mounted two 5.5-inch naval guns. It was armed until at least September 1944 and was manned by 172 Battery of 554 Coast Regiment. The battery observation post was located at SZ 1570 9095. (1)
Aerial photography from 1972 shows that the battery had been removed and the site was occupied by beach and sand dunes. (2)
