Full Description
A fine greenstone Neolithic celt was found at Portisham while digging a drain in 1903. Its length is 6 3/8" and its extreme width 2 3/4". Dr Colley March also showed a portion of a celt found by himself two years ago in a field between Portesham and Steepleton; it is of bedded volcanic rock. <1>
No information was obtained during field investigation regarding the site of these axes, or their present locations. <2>
NRHE: [NB an axe fragment originally recorded here appears to be identical with one recorded as part of SY 68 NW 14]
