Full Description
Two barrows opened by C. Warne of Poxwell Down and numbered 7 & 8. No.7 was 4ft high and contained a possible primary cremation in a Late Bronze Age globular urn, seven secondaries, one with a globular urn, three with bucket or barel-urns and three with urns of unknown type. No.8 was more than 4ft high and contained a probable primary cremation beneath a large, probably inverted urn which was smashed and contained an accessory vessel 3" high. Late Bronze Age. <1-3>
No satisfactory location was found for Poxwell Down during field investigation. Capt. Lane of Poxwell House was unsure, but suggested that area between Poxwell House and the Watercombe parish boundary. Two barrows exist in this area, (SY 78 SW 39 and 42).
To the west of Poxwell House however, are the names Poxwell Drove and Old Down Barn, together more indicative of downland; possibly Poxwell Down is in the area at SY 7284. This area has been ploughed, though much of it is now pasture. No barrows were seen Tithe maps were not available at the time of investigation. <4>
Poxwell a (Warne's No 7) and 2b (Warne's No 8). Two barrows listed. Details as Authys 1-3, except adding that the accessory vessel in No. 8 contained burnt bones, probably of a child, mixed with ashes. <5>
