Full Description
"The ancient seat of the Newburghs" who held the manor of East Lulworth from 1300 to 1541 AD, lay near the church (SY 85378208) according to Leland, and Hutchins records that "near the west end of the church, some foundations have been dug up, and many ruins appear, probably the remains of it. It might have been demolished by Lord Poynings (c1541) and the materials used in building Mount Poynings". Renn considered that the foundations seen in Hutchin's time might be the castle of Lulleworda captured by Robert, Earl of Gloucester in 1142. <1-2>
